Artist Talk this Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 1:30PM

Beginning at 12PM, this coming Saturday, FalseFront will host the closing brunch and artist talk for Emily Nachison's Hylozoic. In addition to the talk, is the release of HYLOZOIC: MATTER LIFE, the exhibition catalog containing exploratory photography and collected source images relating to the site-specific sculptural installation. Paperback, 44 pages, special edition of 25.

Emily Nachison's talk is scheduled for 1:30PM. This light brunch/talk is entirely free and open to all.

FalseFront is pleased to present the site-specific installation, Hylozoic, from Emily Nachison. Working from the philosophical theory that all things–living and inanimate hold life, and therefore are universally related, Nachison constructs grand geologic environments from the man-made synthetics.

Hylozoism, (from Greek hyle, “matter”; zoe, “life”), in philosophy, any system that views all matter as alive, either in itself or by logically in the operation of a world soul or some similar principle. Hylozoism is logically distinct both from early forms of animism, which personify nature, and from panpsychism, which attributes some form of consciousness or sensation to all matter.

Vanessa Calvert: Wall Shade

Dustin Zemel: SHOW SHOW, SHOW tell, SHOW SHOW

PLACE is very pleased to host Artist’s Talks by Vanessa Calvert, Emily Nachison, and Dustin Zemel. They are each raising questions about spatial relationships and how we navigate them.  Nachison is looking at transitional spaces creating environments that are both inviting and displacing. Calvert is exploring very personal discomfort and the space between concealment and exposure. Zemel’s seven panel video installation examines “artificial visual landscapes” and the relationship we have to the information we receive and the possible limitations to our navigation.

December 18, 2010 from 6pm - 10pm, The Settlement ignites the 3rd floor of Pioneer Place Mall with “Occupation” comprised of four artist-run gallery spaces including: People, Place, Store, and Trade.

People's - spearheaded by Chris Haberman and Jason Brown. People's offers original, small-scale works by local artists. Two dimensional and small scale sculpture will be featured by People. All work is cash and carry and priced mod...estly.

Place - Continuing to build on its mission of presenting process-oriented installation work, Place offers Terror and Ego. An exhibition featuring the work of Joshua Berger, TJ Norris, Dustin Zemel, Emily Nachison, Rhoda London, and Vanessa Calvert. Place is co-curated and directed by Palma Corral, Gabe Flores, and Gary Wiseman.

Store - The product of The Settlement’s collaboration with PNCA continues to develop and feature installation works by the BFA students of Victor Maldonado's Art , Ethics, and Transgression class.

Trade - The most fluid of the galleries focuses on local institutions that fill a creative and experimental niche. Trade’s initial activation will be by the curatorial collaboration of Nim Wunnan of Research Club, Tori Abernathy of Recess Gallery, Wynde Dyer of Golden Rule, Elizabeth Lamb gallery director of The White Box, and Max Ogden creating ontologies for communication.
